Agreed.
Yet, it was easier to remain stable with heavy gear than feather light  
plastic modern equipment ...
Since the pana L1 I've come to really appreciate OIS - the best I've  
tried to this day BTW
and then the IBIS or so of the E620 -

Also, I was fairly good at the (military) shooting-range in my younger  
years and have applied the techniques to photography - 1/4 sec hand  
held can be achieved on the L1 without much fuss @ 50mm - then remains  
the problem of a moving target, wind or clouds, etc
