I just tried it again ... it seems to be working now. The gremlins must be
at lunch. I didn't change or clean anything intentionally.

I had the lens on and off multiple times before. I installed new firmware
on the OM-D after I first saw the problem but that hadn't helped. The lens
never showed any new firmware available.

I'll have to make a point of trying to understand this or I might have a
problem when time is short. I haven't noticed any correlation with the max
aperture of the lens or scene brightness, but I'll try again tonight when
it is darker. I may have changed the focusing to spot mode a few days after
having the problem. I wasn't getting any sound or visual indication before,
now I do.
