Not if the winder is gutted, as Moose proposed. If it's a working 
Winder, why not carry the batteries and make use of the unit.

One other difficulty with the winder, as Ken noted (for the MD2), is 
possible looseness when the camera/winder is mounted on a tripod. I 
found that my winder would gradually loosen a little with use - not good 
for stability. I've gone back to using thumb power.
