I also preferred the last image except for the brightest background 
areas surrounding her head.  I think they draw attention away from her 
face.  I think cloning out the bright yellow flowers and suppressing the 
brightness of the brightest tan grass seed heads at left would make a 
big difference to the image.  But I do see what Ken refers as a "3D" effect.
