I have been stopped by local police in Boston, while taking pictures in a
public park. Some of my pictures were of flying planes framed by trees.
Maybe this rose the suspicion of people who called the police. I was
interrogated at the stop. The police was particularly interested if I was
shooting video (I was not). I pulled a regular 2d (film) camera. I did not
want to show them my weird-looking 3d cameras. After they took all my
information down, they let me go.

In another occasion I was taking hyperstereos of (parked) planes at the
Cleveland airport in my way to Greece. The pilot, intrigued by my twin
cameras, must have called security. I was a bit nervous because of my
accent, the fact that I am not US Citizen. I had my laptop transferring
pictures. I was flying out of the country. Upon questioning me, I had to say
that I am "self-employed". I cannot think of a more suspicious combination
of facts (unemployed foreign taking weird airport photos, transferring them
to his laptop, in his way out of the country). But they checked my
background and let me go just in time to board the plane.

It is interesting, when I told them that I was taking pictures of the
planes, they asked me "Why?". My response: "Because I like it". I did not
know what else to say. I really like taking pictures of big planes. There
are no signs inside the airport that photography is not allowed.

I'm not worried about the overly protective mother as in Moose's case.
But I am concerned about the local cop who thinks that I might be a
terrorist casing the power plant in the background. As Krages points
out: "Most attempts at restricting photography are done by lower-level
security and law enforcement officials acting way beyond their
authority. Note that neither the Patriot Act nor the Homeland Security
Act have any provisions that restrict photography."
