I think Bill has a point. The USA has its social and economic issues,
but I'm hard-pressed to pick many countries in this world that have it
all figured out. OK, maybe the Netherlands and Sweden have it all
figured out. Everybody is perfectly fine and there is total racial and
social harmony while preserving native languages and customs is wholly
supported--immigrants can be and do just as they did in their
homelands. Oh, forgot about Canada. That's a harmonious country where
everybody is free to live exactly as they please--even in Quebec!
Nah, it is definitely evident that here in the USA we have
issues--especially economic ones in certain regions of the country,
such as northern Indiana, but I'm reminded that cities grew for
specific reasons. When those reasons no longer exist, it is expected
that people will migrate elsewhere just as they migrated to those
locations. When the mine closes, the mine camp is moved to where the
new mine opens. When you have 30% unemployment, that means you have
30% more people in an area than that area can support. If you can't
find employment there, but jobs exist elsewhere, it then becomes a
decision whether or not to follow the jobs. Some people choose to
while others don't. Each family has their own specific dynamic which
encourages or discourages the movement, but this is nothing new.
Famines in the "old world" drove many people to go across the Atlantic
to the "land of opportunity". Currently, in this "land of opportunity"
the "old world" of the rust belt has driven millions to migrate
elsewhere and places like Texas are the new "land of opportunity".
