Our record with CFL vary widely.  For my own info, I write install date 
on the base with black magic marker. Cheaper ones from IKEA can last 
anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. I also realized the CFL have much 
shorter life when installed in recessed lighting due to heat buildup. 
Adding a socket extension not only lights the room better (extends end 
of bulb out of housing) but gets the base of the bulb out of a hot zone.
