Two things. First, I know I'm sort of a fanatic about seeing the 
texture/detail that I know is in many undifferentiated highlight areas 
in images. I'm very aware of and interested in it in the natural world, 
and so want to see it in images so they will appear natural to me.

Second, my Samsung monitor is hardware calibrated, too. Yet calibration, 
at least with the hardware/software tools I have, doesn't set an 
absolute brightness level. So we may be viewing at different levels of 
brightness, which makes a big difference in this image to me.

So - taste and technology - who knows what the mix is here.

Heartily agreed. That's one reason I've never seen much point in HDR 
except where different areas are to be treated differently.
