Unemployment is very high here, and even those with jobs often make less
than $7 an hour. The competition for good jobs is fierce, because even
university grads often can't find a job paying even a basic living wage. A
few yrs ago, a steel mill opened close to where I live, and they announced
that they were going to hire 100 workers. The jobs paid $20 an hour. A
middle class income here, but not really a huge amount of money. 25,000
people applied for those 100 jobs! That's how bad it is. Those were
blue-collar factory jobs, but even white collar jobs requiring education are
often seeing hundreds of applicants for each opening.

Because of this, companies here are very, very selective and credential
crazy, requiring specialized degrees from entry-level employees.
