They are mostly a mystery to me too. I've tried reading the 
descriptions,which makes my head hurt. I"ve tried clicking on them, 
which mostly makes thing somewhere from funny through awful looking.

I've tried a couple of 'recipes' that used some blending option or other.

The sliders at the bottom of the settings window are sometimes useful. 
For example, an application of LCE that does nice things in the mid 
tones may push highlights or shadows off the ends,  or compress 
highlights too much. Using the sliders to limit the brightness range 
over which the blending occurs can often cure such things.
