Some of the old flashes have a high trigger voltage which can destroy
your camera. It doesn't have anything to do with international vs.
U.S.. It is just how the flash was designed.

Doesn't the built in flash on the E-500 have enough power for what you
want to do? You may have different needs but I seldom mount the flash
on the camera. The zoom control and remote cable for the FL-50 give it
quite a bit of flexibility. I use it on the end of the cable more
often than on the hot shoe.
