I'm not sure I understand the question. If you place the hood/adapter on
a table resting on either round end and rest something stiff and flat
across the top on the other round end, the dimension I quoted is the
distance from the thing on top to the surface of the table.
Considered as a conic section cut orthogonal to the axis, this dimension
would be called the length.
