And what year would that have been? I think you'd find NYC much changed now.
It certainly is different now than when I lived there, on the Lower East
Side from '79-'90.  It was bad when I first moved there (got mugged four
times in the first year--mostly due to being a geeky boy with glasses from
the sticks, pretending to be a rocker wearing skinny ties and eyeliner
coming home from clubs at 4am) then got better, then got worse when crack
arrived on the scene in the mid-'80's, then got better again starting about
'89. 

I visited NYC on my own in 1976 (when I was 22 and even more naive), stayed
with a friend's granparents up near Columbia on the edge of Harlem. I must
admit I got a lot of advice with regard to where to and where not to get off
the A train, mostly from people of color, looking out for me.

And that trip was when I bought my OM-1md from 47th Street Photo. (OM
