Um, I have evidence that this is true.

When I was training employees of a Major Corporation a number of years
ago, one of the managers approached me privately with a request.
"Emphasize to my people that what the spell checker suggests is not
*always* correct.  They think it's smarter than they are and just
accept anything it proposes.  When they send letters to customers, we
look like idiots."
