OK, I have experience with 6 P&S cameras (!), of which 3 are the
pocket type. I like the clamshell Styluses by Olympus for build
quality. My C7000 is hard to come by now, but that kind of thing
offers a guy that likes a lot of control something to sink his teeth
into. I might look at a place like Refurbdepot.com for the picks of
previous years to get a good camera at a reasonable price. Also, 8-10
MP off a tiny sensor just seems gimmicky to me. All the good pixels
seem like they were in place when those cameras were delivering 4-5
MP.

One thing I will say is that my daughter's Stylus Verve gets universal
praise for its unique shape, jewelry-like looks, and robustness. The
rounded shape actually makes it very comfortable to carry in a
trousers pocket. Good luck finding one though and it's auto
everything when you do.

If it were I, I'd give the Fuji F series a look. The latest
iterations have manual control capabilities in addition to the usual
auto everything. The scuttlebut is that they have a tendency to blow
highlights, but one can learn to shoot carefully with that in mind.
You always have to shoot carefully with that in mind anyway! The size
of those cameras is certainly attractive, being about like the form
factor of an MP3 player, though they're a bit ugly to me otherwise.
All these dang cameras now lack an optical viewfinder, and that being
the case it would be worthwhile to get a camera with good noise
reduction at higher ISOs, like the Fujis, since you need greater speed
if you don't have your forehead as part of what steadies the little
beastie. The biggest flaw of my wife's and daughter's exposures come
from camera shake.
