Or shooting ducks with a Can(n)on. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Walt is hitting on something which I've been trying to express
for the past few weeks. A digital camera, like the Canons, is
fully capable of dynamiting the fish right out of the water. The
argument is that when you need a boatload of fish, carp and all,
there is no substitute for raw TNT. You'd starve with that
flyrod. If film is the equivelent to a flyrod, it means that
some fish will get away. With the dynamite you are guaranteed to
get the big fish, even though it means culling out hundreds of
other ones.

I got an email from one of the Isle Royale participants who shot
a ton of B&W. His level of satisfaction from doing so was
extemely high. Where the rest of us were blasting away with our
E-1s, he was loading roll after roll of B&W into his
medium-formats and a beautiful OM-2S. In a way, I regret not
being able to shoot more B&W myself--but that's not where my
vision resided this trip. He slowed down, measured the light,
took the time to frame the shots better and probably ended up
with more "keepers" than the rest of us combined.

Digital has an important place in my life--80% of what I shoot
is best served by the lowly E-1. However, it's the remaining
20% where I'm struggling. I need to reevaluate (and rescan
samples from old projects) film to see if I can gain what I
think I can gain from Portra 160. If so, I'll gladly avoid
purchasing a new camera in the next few months. I just need a
stopgap technology to give me high-quality 10+MP images. Maybe
I'll fire up the scanner tonight.

Besides, this would give me my fullframe wide-angle...

Digital is still an outstanding tool for concept-testing. So
many times I've shot pictures for testing a compositional
concept. With film, these trial shots cost me lots of money,
with digital, they're essentially free. For my personal work
and speculative work, I probably have a 20:1 test shot ratio.
Basically, we're talking about digital proofing.
