Hi Larry,

We pay te equivalent of about USD4.50/USgal here.

Health insurance is NOT free, public health is paid for by a 1.5 to 2.5%
'garnishee' on wages. For that I get to wait for two years for
sub-standard service in anything less than life-or-death.
dental/ambulance/chiropractic/optical is not included. Go to your GP?
expect to face a $5-$10 gap & some form filling.

Then the leader-du-jour expects me to cough up another $4300 per year
for basic private health insurance to ease the load on the system... for
which I get a percentage rebate against the other.

The problem with the public system is that it's over-stretched, &
under-funded, as the medicare dollars dissappear into the coffers.

the problem with the private insurance system is that if you don't use
the insurer's hospitals & doctors you have to pay a large gap (like an
excess or deductible) on any services. If you DO use their services you
have to wonder who is making the decisions about the best way to manage
your health care, the medico, or more likely- the accountant.

the fuel dollars? straight into the coffers as well... to pay for
massive ad campaigns about how wonderful Australia's new Industrial
Relations legislation is...
