Indeed, and I choose to go another way, at least for now. On the other
hand, your pointillist posted example certainly doesn't seem to be
normal. As to why, I don't know, although others have posted possible
reasons. In any case, the many samples I looked at at 100% before making
my decision on the E-1 were never like what you posted.

Joel's full pixel samples of his daughter are more like what I saw. Not
awful, and not a problem at all reduced for the web, but significantly
limiting the cropping and large print options.

I keep reading tea leaves, or press releases, and hoping. Oly's release
on the E-330 says:

"For the very best in imaging performance the Olympus E-330 incorporates
a newly-developed latest generation MOS sensor with 7.5 million pixels.
This type of sensor offers image quality comparable to an FFT-CCD but
with the low power requirements of an MOS Sensor. A simple amplifier in
each pixel reduces the number of circuit paths, minimising the surface
area that is unresponsive to light. The effectively enlarged
photosensitive area thereby helps to provide superior image quality, as
well as higher sensitivity with less noise. Responsiveness is similarly
enhanced for fast processing, making the camera capable of delivering a
burst rate of 3.0 frames per second. Coupled with the TruePic TURBO
image processor, results will convince even professional users."

I notice "provide superior image quality, as well as higher sensitivity
with less noise" and "results will convince even professional users"
and, perhaps foolishly, have my hopes raised.

Maybe Walt will tell us what's really up even before the web reviewers.
