Until Fujichrome Provia 100F and Kodak Portra films came on the
scene, it wasn't really possible to use 35mm for these
applications for any real semblence of quality AND flexibility.
Sure, we could get outstanding results with Kodachrome 25, but
the slow speed made it unusable for the bulk of applications.
In 35mm, the Vericolor films were pretty much rotgut.

Wedding work took a major turn for the worse about the same time
when the "Photojournalism Style" hit the scene and was the
excuse for using an inferior film/format for shooting. The art
of high quality, high detail imaging went right out the window
with PJ.

I was working with some old wedding pictures I shot on 6x7.
Wow, what detail, what tonal depth and subtlety! Digital is
good, but there is still something missing. You can't see it,
but you can sure sense it. Especially in how the backgrounds
warm as they darken.

I believe that today's digital cameras would not have been
accepted had it not been for the dumbing down of the industry
with the migration to 35mm first. The EOS-1n and F5, Provia and
Portra all needed to happen first. The rush to digital would
have needed another few years to occur had the primary
conversion been from medium-format. I definitely wouln't have
attempted to shoot weddings with an E-1 when the majority of my
competition would be shooting medium-format.
