Suppose N*kon and C*non had immediately taken up the four thirds banner and
produced four thirds telecentric designs ... I don't think they would have
buried Olympus (I think Olympus has shown that they have excellent ideas).

Does moving from full frame towards APS mean a company believes its
customers aren't as gullible? Didn't C*non and N*kon move from huge cameras
to OM size once Olympus won their bet that they could succeed with the OM-1?

Ultimately if a company doesn't make a hopeless blunder it will adapt
whatever the market says best meets their needs ... it looks like all three
are moving away from full size sensors towards telecentric designs on their
own chosen terms. Olympus has been the most adamant about the change ... And
they were probably right. Whether APS or four thirds will completely
dominate the other, I can't say. Moore's law suggests perhaps even smaller
could dominate at some point in the not distant future.
