22-44 isn't wide angle? Lots of people consider 24 and shorter to be
super wide. Wide angle is the area that has been taking the longest to
develop for DSLRs. Probably because it's a whole new design area where
few designers had any experience. A number of solutions are showing up
for the APS sensor size cameras, with a 10-22 for EOS, an 11-18 from
Tamron and 12-24s from Tokina and Sigma for several mounts, a 12-24 from
Nik*n, etc. I hope enough 4/3 bodies will be sold that the 3rd party
ones will become available for 4/3.

However, If you need wider than 11mm, Oly is and will likely remain your
only alternative for the forseeeable future. It's because 10-12mm with
the 1.5-1.6 factor of the other modest price DSLRs is the eq. of roughly
15-19mm, and nothing wider than that was available for film SLRs. Even
the 12 and 14mm rangefinder lesnes are relatively new. So 4/3 is the
only format that 'needs' anything wider and I think makers of 4/3 mount
bodies, only Oly so far, are the only ones with any reasonable
commercial incentive to make such short focal lengths.

To get wider with a DSLR, you need one with a bigger sensor or the Oly
7-14 lens. I think the 7-14 is an amazing accomplishment and 4/3 is
lucky to have it. Does that make the price seem a little better? There's
a $125 rebate in the US, but it isn't much.
