Dunno what it's like now, but when I was at Grampian TV our ENG shot on

Umax, transferred to Beta for use in the station. Some of the machines
could use Umax straight from the camera. Lending tapes were converted
again to VHS. But the archive, such as it was (I was there to advise on

its development), was Beta.

The Umaxes were used again and again until they got to noisy. Usually
you
could edit a second or two out of them to get worthwhile footage, but
eventually...

Hi Donald,

New email ? Didn't recognise it with all the numbers added in there -
has it always been like that ?

Anyway, interesting to hear you were at Grampian. I'm currently at
Teddington studios - which used to be Thames TV. There's a few old
Thames staff still around - including the VT guy. Every now and then he
digs out the old 1 1/2 inch reel-reel video tapes and we all have a good
laugh. Not at the format or quality - more at the content. He has a
particularly large collection of "Christmas Collection Out-Takes" tapes,
including ones from all the regions (Grampian included).

Can't say I've ever seen Umax in use (bit before my time I'm afraid),
but everything now is on the latest derivative of Beta - "DigiBeta".
That won't be around for too long, though. Things are moving towards
Hard Disc recorders at an alarming rate, and I suspect the onset of High
Def TV production will hasten that move.

And for what it's worth, quite a lot of the ENG industry is actually
using DV and MiniDV formats (or DVC / whatever other equivalent) due to
size / weight advantages. It is noticeable in the quality of quite a
lot of footage being broadcast these days (ie - it's not very good !).
