If you're after a sound card for recording music, have a look at the E-Mu
range. Excellent cards, but moving into the studio range of cards.

It depends how much money you want to spend, how good your ear/hifi is and
how many records you want to transfer. I had about 2000lps and a carefully
ballanced hifi designed only around playing classical lps..

I tried the sound blaster live originally. *Hoplessly* noisy analogue
inputs. far noisier than a good lp playing. More noisy than a good
cassette deck (tandberg 3034) without any noise reduction! sound way off
the pace muddy flat horrible. So poor that cd remasters of my lps sounded
better than the lps transfer to computer. Cannot recommend unless you have
a cheap midi system.

I then tried the maudiophile 24/96 (about 150 pounds) is not bad using its
on board ADC but not as good as reasonable cassette deck say Tandberg 3034
but very quiet. However, good open reel like a Teac, Tandberg or
Ferrograph walks the floor with it at 15" per second. Even at 96Khz 24bit
there is a loss of stereo image and everything sounds flat and grey. (its
far worse if you go 16 bit 44khz). Its also easy to overload its inputs
because the volume control works in the *digital* domain AFTER the ADC
conversion so if the input is too high for the ADC then you will get
clipping and distortion.

next I went for a external ADC converter (300 pounds) and connected it to
the maudiophiles digital inputs and outputs. Result still not good enough
for me but it solved the input overload problem.

my conclusion to faithfully transfer music from my system on to computer
without losing all the fine detail is not ecconomically viable.

For references here is my system with prices when new or ebay prices for
the old stuff
garrard 401 (150 ebay)
in loricraft plinth and loricraft regulated power supply (500 new)
hadcock 242se incognito wired (600 new)
ortofon mc 25fl (225 new)
Kinshaw perception sa phono stage (750 new)
kinshaw perception pre amp (1000 new)
Quad 63 electrostatic speakers (3500 new)
quad II amps (600 ebay) rebuilt by myself (600) with audio note resistors,
cards wire, audio note paper in oil caps and black gate power supply and
cathde caps. kiwame cathde resistor.
