Addressing a couple of points that have come up in this discussion:

Propane will do the job about as well as butane.

Dust-off, the old-fashioned freon sort will also do, but beware! certain
products have replaced freon with nitrous oxide - a powerful oxidant.

I'm suspicious of CO2 because it's water soluble and acidic (like stop
bath).

Nitrogen won't affect the developer, it's just not as readily available and
is lighter than air.

Krypton & Xenon would also work very well if you can get them, but they're
even scarcer than Argon (which is actually more abundant in air than CO2
incidentally).
