It's not an ideal solution but it does work. I was able to get the filters 
in snugly by pushing down on the outer ring and looking from the rear side 
of the hood it is seated squarely against the back. I couldn't get it to 
fall out by shaking the hood. Getting it back out is a bit more risky and I 
made sure there was a lens cloth between my finger and the filter coating 
when I pushed it out from the back. I wouldn't really want to do it "in the 
field" though. Maybe I should add a disclaimer in case anyone damages their 
favourite B+W.

Which hood would you use in combination with a step-up ring? One of those 
which screws into the filter?
