This is for web use and compressing from a 110mb+ 14bit Tif scan to a 100K
jpeg is, surprise, losing a lot of valid data along the way I was hoping
somebody had a secret scanning formula that said for optimum web output
start scanning at resolution (x) and reduce file size in steps (y).
I've looked at lots of scanning info/guides and they all concentrate on
getting maximum quality from the neg as opposed to a balanced procedure to
produce optimum output for web. I'll try at 2000dpi.

Reduce the file by a few step is the right approach, if your original slide
is good you only need to make an light unsharp mask at the final stage, no
need to do unsharp at each stage. To get the best result you should scan at
the highest optical resolution and resample to reduce the size. But if for
web use start at 2000dpi should be good enough.
