Well, really at the short end. As you say, one slips into macro mode at 60mm, not 300mm and working distance is pretty short at close macro, as you also mention. On the other hand, the 1.9m regular close focus at 300mm (almost twice as close as the 3.5m of the 300/4.5) is really quite useful for modest close-ups with great working distance.

You zoom out to 60mm, turn the focus ring fully close and it clicks into its macro range. You then "zoom" out to focus closer and closer and closer. As Bill told me: the subject is almost touching the front element at its closest. You have to remove the lens hood to allow light to fall on it.
