Most large format lenses specify the aperture where they are diffraction
limited ... I don't think someone with a German lens budget is going to
improve beyond being diffraction limited.

I can't see how blurring an image with the optics would change photons
from being discrete and creating random noise.

The only time I've heard of a lens manufacturer bragging about how there
lenses blurred the image was soft focus portrait lenses. (OT - Would a
photo informed wife/girl friend make you sleep in the outside if you
took a photo of her with a soft focus lens?)

Not having ever seen a claim that lenses can be too sharp when used with
film before, I can't say I have any special knowledge but I sure can't
see any reasons to support that.
