Doesn't a focal reducer make the light rays less perpendicular to the
image plane? ... Just the opposite of what the digital lenses are trying
to accomplish. Even so a long focal length lens has light rays that
could probably be bent.

Does the focal plane move? A telescope eyepiece rack can often move an
eyepiece pretty long distances.
