Any "reasonable" still digicam has a shutter. Videocams with still capability 
operate without a shutter, though.

The sensor is similar in many ways to film. It is "exposed" for a certain 
amount of time, during which photon dislodge electrons, causing a charge to 
build up in a cell.

When the exposure is complete, the cells are serially charge-pumped off the 
chip.
