I think Peter has not seen the opaque illumination window in front of the 
prism housing. If this is made dark (as at night) or by putting a finger across 
it during daylight, the display vanishes. Restore the availability of exterior 
light and the display is back again. What I find with my OM4T is that the 
display does not show until I flick the "memory-clear" lever.

I always turn the electrics off as much as I can when the camera is not in 
use, by turning the speed ring to the red "B" zone.
