Ouch. That was me...

The VAT and taxes were calculated on the basis of the repair charge 
mentioned in the invoice - the package, containing both the camera and the 
invoice, was opened by the customs (incidentally, not in France, but in 
Germany, upon entrance into the European Community).
A possible solution in the future might be not to send the invoice in the 
same package as the camera, and to mention "Gift" / "Cadeau" or something 
along these lines on the package?
