And in addition to the matter of lens resolving power, is the matter of film
flatness. Most film does not sit flat in the camera, thus making it much more
difficult for the lens to do its job. Robert Monaghan has a huge page devoted
to this issue. Aerial survey cameras all use vacuum backs to overcome this
problem, and Sinarbron uses some kind of sticky septum to keep the film
where it should be ...

There are Pentax 6x7 cameras prepared for astrophotography with vacuum backs. I am not sure whether Contax still makes their SLR with the vacuum back. Since most lenses have field curvature I don't think it is a big issue with 35mm which is much smaller and better controlled. Some of these photography sites do tend to obsess about things that do not matter much for ordinary shooting. Yeah, some of it matters if you are trying to get usable images from space.
