I'm appreciating this off-topic thread as I'm going backpacking
on Isle Royale (in Lake Superior) the first week of September.

Even though my hiking partner and I are very experienced and
prepared, this thread was a nice sanity check.

I bought new boots. Took the advice of my friend and bought
REALLY GOOD boots. No more cheezy $80 wannabees. Leather
uppers with gore-tex liners and Vibram's newer, better
self-cleaning sole designs.

The first time I put them on I thought "boy are these STIFF!"
Talk about the viagra of boots. Anyway, I put them on, walked
around the house for an hour. Took them off, wore something
else for an hour. Put them back on and walked for three or four
miles. Since then, I've worn them for 20-30 miles (not
including normal at-office mileage). Not a bit of a problem.
Quality boots DO make a huge difference.

Talk about good stability. I walked a ways along railroad
tracks and have never been so sure-footed.

Anyway, I already have an EXCELLENT sleeping bag and we are
sharing the weight of a tent, water-filter and cooking gear.

Otherwise, our supplies line up almost identically to what has
been mentioned on this list. Clothing is a huge variation,
though. We pack clothing a bit differently than how you would in
snake territory.
