For some users, one or more of these advantages is the deciding factor. But
for most users, the SLR's raison d'etre -- the ability to view what you're
photographing through the lens -- trumps any other consideration. Which is
why the SLR has almost completely taken over professional formats smaller
than 4x5.

So, I'd be curious to hear from Larry Clark a more detailed explanation why
he switched from an SLR to a rangefinder. It must go deeper than just liking
the camera's lenses or its "feel." I'm not asking for a "moral
justification"; I just want a better understanding of the personal factors.

Actually for me, it is the viewfinder. Through the lens viewing of
an SLR is over rated IF you normally just use a few lenses.
Rangefinder advantages: the ability to see what is outside the frame
as well as what is inside and, the most mysterious, the noise factor
in the viewfinder encourages strong composition to overcome it. Some
people with SLR install gridded focusing screens to get the same
effect. There is the added advantage that if you use wide angle more
than telephoto, focus with a rangefinder is faster and more accurate
than with an SLR.
