Weird issue with the 4Ti, this has never happened two me, not even on the
two occassions that the camera fell...

Actually, the flash _would_ have worked. Once my stepdaughter was taking a
swimming exam and I had brought the 4Ti (but no set of spare batteries, and
I had been using these batteries for a long time already), sure enough after
a few shots the batteries died, and I still wanted to continue taking
pictures. So, indeed I put the camera on mechanical 1/60 and simply used it
with the flash (T32) by doing GN calculations; worked well! The only thing
one doesn't have at one's disposition, of course, is TTL flash.
