Decibel is definition from a simple ratio between two powers or energies, and a doubling of power/energy is 3dB (and is not restricted to audio). This holds true for both consumer and pro applications. The confusion starts when you measure voltage or pressure instead of energy directly, because a doubling of voltage/pressure will give 4 times the energy. 4=2x2 => 3dB+3dB=6dB. In other words it's very important to be clear about what you want to see doubled.

dBSPL (Sound Pressure Level) is the ratio between the measured pressure and a pressure defined as the treshold of hearing (0.2nBar). Since we're talking pressure and not energy, a doubling is 6dB.

Near-OM-content: The XA is *very* quiet.
