: Too bad I don't know which combo I lens tested.

Below is some correspondence I had last year with Neil Graham Watson; he
mailed me had evidence that indeed only the 180/2.8 with higher numbers than
200.000 are consider to be matched by Olympus (i.e. have no negative effect
on image quality). To bad I never received the scan of the Japanese
datasheet that mentions it as a fact.

They must have redesigned the 180/2.8 after the 180/2 was designed. The
scanned data sheet (0584) of the 1.4xA in the eSIF doesn't mention either of
the 180mm lenses. At least this is evidence that the original 180/2.8 was
not compatible at least not for Olympus' quality standards. The 1085 Lens
Handbook (containing the 180/2) doesn't mention the 180/2.8 either as being
compatible.

Maybe there's a list member with a later 1.4 xA data sheet in English that
mentions both 180mm lenses? If so, I would like a scan. And a data sheet of
the later 180mm lens (if it exists) would als be nice; maybe the lens
cross-section diagram reveals some differences.

Hello Hans,

Today I went to the main Olympus Service Center in Japan and asked
specifically about the converter. The service center manager showed me
the technical data sheets which they keep. The sheets listed every
olympus lens and put a circle ( fits but not recommended ), a double circle
( recommended ) or a cross ( damage will result to lens if fitted ) next
to each lens to indicate if it was compatible with the 1.4x
converter. Unfortunately he would not give me a photo copy of the sheet
but I managed to copy down the lens with the recommended double circles
next to them. The 300 F4.5 was recommended on the technical data sheet (
but not mentioned in the sales literature )

The supported lens for the 1.4 x converter.

180 F2

180 F2.8 *( only lens with serial numbers greater than 200,000 are
recommended as the optics of the lens were changed ) ( serial numbers less
than 200,000 not recommended)

250 F2
300 F4.5
350 F2.8
400 F6.3

Regards

Neil
