After thinking some more about this, I think the matte
screen is more sensitive to the different focus points
of different eyes. Have you noticed how someone else
using binoculars or a telescope will foucs them, and
when you look through them, they are slightly out of
focus for you? . . . (snip)

Donald,

There is no comparison between focusing on a matt screen and looking
through a telescope/binocular. The matt screen in your viewfinder
appears at a fixed optical distance - roughly 2 metres (this is the
optical distance between your eye and the screen, not the physical
distance). It's like looking through a microscope. The only difference
that short or long sight will make is how clearly you can see the image
on the ground glass screen; it will not come to focus at a different
point.

You may need some eyepiece correction like the built-in adjustable
eyepiece lens in the OM-4(T/Ti). Without such correction, you may not
be able to discern clearly what is the point of focus on the camera's
lens that gives the sharpest image on the matt screen.

The split image wedge on the 1-13 and 2-13 screens, which is a sort of
rangefinder, is more accurate in practice because our eyes are good at
seeing the difference between an unbroken horizontal line and one that
has a discontinuity.
