A side benefit of the ability to focus off center with a 2-4 screen is
that you quickly become adept at focusing for best depth of field -
without moving the camera. That is real nice for tripod mounted shots.
Just equalize the fuzziness of the nearest and furthest subject matter.
Alternately twist the focusing ring to judge the travel from near to far
than back off one half that distance. No camera movement needed!

It is so darn quick now, versus the old 1 series way of centering the
camera and focusing on the near subject matter, then moving the camera
and focusing on the far subject matter, in order to determine (off the
distance scale) what distances they are at. And then using the depth of
field indicators to find the best focusing point. It is a good thing
that plants (my most frequent subject matter of old) didn't move in the
meantime :-)

It helps to have shot enough with a particular lens to predict the depth
of field for a certain aperture. But that seems to have come with lots
of use of my 135mm Macro.
