I found Western Union to be more expensive still. Last time I bought
something from someone in Australia, he was kind enough just to accept US
dollars in cash. (Thanks Peter!)
Since then I discovered that banks have different rates to draft checks in
other currencies. In my case, I called my usual bank and asked the cost and
they said $25 or something like that. So I just asked bluntly, "Is that the
best rate I'm going to get?" She referred me to another bank down the
street that drafts such checks for about half as much. Call around.
