[OM] OT ebay auction ethics

A quick question to those who are experienced in using ebay. I did check the archives, but there were just too many posts on the topic to wade through.

I have seen a lens which has 3 days to go, a minimum bid and 1 bid so far. I have contacted the seller about the condition, and it sounds fine. As I won't be able to bid at the weekend (no 'net access at home) I'm thinking of two options:

1. put a decent bid in now and hope for the best

2. make him an offer privately.

I don't know if this second approach is unethical, but I would prefer it, under the circumstances. What if there had been no bids? Would this method still be unfair?

Thanks,

Simon E.
