I can believe this for shorter lenses, I'd estimate up to 100 mm or so if
your hand holding is _really_ stable, but I suspect that with lenses longer
than that you'll always be better off using a tripod, even w/o
mirror/diaphragm prefire. I think hand holding the camera, to a certain
extent, makes up for not using prefire by dampening the vibrations more than
in a tripod-mounted camera using a cable release. There just must be a
certain focal length limit - which may be individually different within a
certain range - above which the influence of camera shake becomes a stronger
factor than mirror/diapragm-induced vibration
