My 35mm 2.8 also has blacked out lettering. The previous owner told me
he did it since he believed that the lettering could be reflected into
the lens when used with a filter. The lens was supplied with a UV
filter which I think he kept on the lens at all times.
Still takes great pictures and I hardly even notice the extra weight :)
