Not to mention 617s subsequent role as one of the first pathfinder
squadrons - whose job was to locate the target and then dawdle around
pointing it out to the main bomber force. This meant that they spent
much more time in some very hostile air space, chucking out flares and
such which might as well have been the finger of God pointing at them.
