Hmm, sounds like you're planning a pilgrimage to Mecca, huh? :-)

I concur with others' warm recommendations of the Konica Hexar,
except that its wonderful 35/f2 Hexanon lens cannot satisfy your
condition 1. There has been an insistent rumor mill about the
imminent arrival of a new Hexar -- this time with interchangeable
lenses, but thus far it's been pure vaporware. The current Hexar
costs about one root canal. :-)

The other alternative, and probably a better camera overall, is
the terrific Contax G1 or G2. This is a terrific, professional
quality P&S camera, with a titanium body, AF, AE, _and_ manual
override for almost every function. Furthermore, you get a fast
45/f2 std. lens, as well as a selection of 5-6 other lenses,
incl. such exotica as 16/f8 fisheye, 21/f2.8 super-wide, 28/f2.8
wide angle, etc. All lenses are Carl Zeiss.

The drawback is the price: a modest outfit consisting of a G2
with 45/f2, 21/f2.8, and 90/f2.8 lenses will set you back a cool
$3K. And this does not even include a flash...

Of course, during the trip you may be able to trade such an outfit
for a modest oil well, or maybe a harem, or a camel herd, or, in
extreme instance, for a glass of water... :-)

Cheers,
