I have a Trekker, and am quite fond of it. (There are two types of Benbo
owners, those who swear *by* their tripods, and those those who swear *at*
their tripods... :-)

I've heard the original Benbo designers have left to form their own
bent-bolt tripod company -- you should probably check it out before buying
Benbo. Sorry, don't have more details.

I've never tried it with a 300mm, but use it regularly with the 85-250,
which is probably bigger and heavier, albeit not so long. It does vibrate a
bit with the big zoom, but that's easily solved by adding mass -- I hang my
camera bag from the center post. I'm using it with two Bogen/Manfrotto
heads: the 3265 "grip-ball", and the 3275 mini-gear-head.
