Sorry to hear about the results from your trip. It's a real tragedy to go on a
trip like that and have your photos come out bad.
As to your question about spot metering a face: the spot meter measures a very
limited area of the total scene in the viewfinder, but will set its value to
18 0ray unless you tell it otherwise. Having a spot meter is only the first
step...you also have to decide what exposure value you want to give that area.
Depending on the person's skin tone and your intent, you might have to make
adjustments to the spot meter value (i.e. overexposing a little for normal
Caucasian skin).
