<< Second question. I would like suggestions please on OM lenses for nature
and wildlife photography. I'm about to buy a bellows for closeup work of
flowers and would like hints on which lens(es) would work best. Also I'd
like some opinions on really long lenses for bird photos. I've never
used really long Zuikos (anything 300mm or over) and would like to know
if they are worth the cost. Any ideas on non-Zuiko long lenses?

Hello Lynn,

I have the Zuiko 300/4.5 and use it with the 1/4 converter and am very pleased
with the combination. Compact, light, and not very expensive. Longer
lenses are sometimes needed for birds, however, and as Oly users our choices
are somewhat limited. There are the Zuiko offerings, such as the 400 and
600 mentioned in other posts, and also the very fine 350/2.8, but they are
expensive and very rare. Third party lens makers are making fewer and fewer
lenses to fit our OM's, but this is what I know that is available new and/or
used.

Tamron makes a 300/2.8 in an adaptall mount that can be found used for around
$1,600 US, or new for about $2,200. Try to get the latest version as I
understand it is significantly better. Tamron also made a 400/4 in an
adaptall that enjoyed a good reputation, but I don't see that one around too
much.

Sigma makes a 300/2.8 ($2,200) and 500/4.5 ($3,500) lens in an OM mount
(special order), but now you are getting into Zuiko $$ territory. I also
noticed that Sigma is offering it's 180/2.8 macro in an OM mount, if you are
interested.

Tokina used to offer it's 300/2.8 in an OM mount, but I have >never< seen one
for sale used. Older Tokina SD 400 5.6 in OM mount was available until
recently but at less than $300 new I don't think the quality could be very
good.

Hope this helps,
