Tina,
If you restore your laptop to the factory settings do you risk losing
the Drobo backup software? That could be a disaster.
I've never had to resort to a factory restore and I'd be very wary of
doing so. Unfortunately, it's an easy option for the tech suggesting it.
If you do go with Synology, it can create an image backup of your
laptop and install software on a USB key to allow you to do a bare
metal restore.

I have been having computer problems and had to have Dell talk me through
restoring my computer to factory settings and I'm reinstalling everything
so it will be a few days before I decide what to do about the Drobos.
